Friday Afternoon Bowling Green Weather Update

Real-time Bowling Green weather radar:

Today, 5/8 – Partly Cloudy & Hot – High 87˚ / Tonight – Mostly Cloudy; Iso’d Showers & Thunderstorms – Low 65˚

3pm 86˚ – 6pm 83˚ – 9pm 74˚ – 12am 70˚ – 3am 67˚– 6am 65˚

Good afternoon, we’ve nearly made it to the end of the work week and another warm day is currently in progress across Kentucky. Temperatures have already reached the middle 80s with cumulus clouds filling in across the state. It’s been a while since we have talked about rain chances, but that will change over the next several days. This is not what anyone wanted to see as we head into the weekend.

We are keeping an eye on an area of showers and thunderstorms currently entering the western portions of the state. This area of precipitation is associated with a shortwave trough swinging through the region and clouds will increase throughout the afternoon as storms move northeast.

Most of the precipitation will pass to our north, but isolated showers and storms will be possible after sunset and overnight. Otherwise, expect a mild night tonight with lows in the middle 60s.

Saturday, 5/9 – Mostly Cloudy; Iso’d Thunderstorms – High 86˚ / Saturday Night – Mostly Cloudy; Iso’d Showers & Storms – Low 66˚

Broad upper-level divergence ahead of a trough centered over the High Plains will provide enough lift for isolated thunderstorms across the region tomorrow. It does not look like a washout, just a few quick hitting storms possible throughout the day.

In fact, the weather tomorrow will resemble a summer pattern with storms producing vigorous thunder and lightning and locally heavy downpours. Dew points in the 60s will make it feel a bit soupy and precipitable water values around 1.5″ are expected meaning storms will have plentiful moisture to work with.

Isolated showers and storm are expected to continue overnight tomorrow with lows only falling into the 60s again.

Sunday, 5/10 – Mostly Cloudy; Sct’d Showers & Storms – High 87˚ / Sunday Night – Sct’d Showers & Storms – Low 66˚

Sunday’s forecast looks very similar to tomorrow’s as an upper-level trough will still be positioned over the central United States. The only difference may be slightly more precipitation coverage on Sunday due to the trough axis being slightly farther east. Severe storms will be possible west of the Mississippi River, but it looks like lightning and heavy downpours will be the only threats in south-central Kentucky as of now.

Rain chances will persist into Sunday night and things will become more interesting on Monday as the threat for severe weather shifts east into Kentucky. Stay tuned over the weekend for more details as we get closer to Monday.
