Friday Afternoon Bowling Green Weather Update

Good afternoon, we are seeing a beautiful end of the work week today with mostly clear skies. Unfortunately, looks can be deceiving as it is still very cold today thanks to a broad upper-level trough centered over the eastern U.S. and surface high pressure over the Ohio Valley. Anyone else frustrated with this cold weather?

High pressure will continue to influence the weather as an area of clouds and moisture currently centered over eastern Oklahoma moves into southern Kentucky overnight. The dry air in our region associated with the high pressure will work to dissipate any precipitation although we can expect an increase in clouds as low temperatures bottom out in the upper teens.

Saturday – Partly Cloudy – High 39˚ / Sat Night – Mostly Cloudy; Stray Shower Late – Low 33˚

Fortunately, our temperatures will trend warmer beginning tomorrow ahead of the next weather system. Expect weak warm air advection to occur on Saturday with easterly surface winds turning south as high pressure moves off to the east. High temperatures should make a run at 40° during the afternoon hours.

As this warm and moist air mass is pulled over the cold air mass already in place, enough lift will be available to produce an increase in clouds and precipitation by Saturday night. Skies will become mostly cloudy Saturday night which will prevent temperatures from dropping much. As precipitation chances increase after midnight, we should stay above freezing so while precipitation may briefly begin as a mix of rain and snow, expect a quick transition to isolated rain showers.

Sunday – Sct’d Rain Showers – High 50˚ / Sun Night – Rain – Low 35˚

An area of low pressure northwest of Kentucky will bring better rain chances to the area on Sunday. The best chance for precipitation will be to our north in the morning hours and southern Kentucky may stay dry for a brief period. Skies will be cloudy with southerly wind helping temperatures approach the 50º mark.

Precipitation coverage will increase during the afternoon and periods of rain will continue through the evening with around 0.1″ of rainfall expected before sunset. A cold front associated with the area of low pressure to our northwest will cross Kentucky Sunday night and rain will ramp up ahead of this front with an additional quarter inch of rainfall expected overnight.

As the cold front moves across the state, precipitation coverage will decrease as we approach daybreak on Monday. Surface winds will turn to the west overnight and low temperatures will drop to the middle 30s. Sunday’s rain event will only be the beginning of a wet pattern expected to continue through most of next week.
