It has been another dreary day across southern Kentucky this afternoon as there are some pesky low clouds around the region. These clouds have limited temperatures to the middle 30s this afternoon.

Kentucky is experiencing northwest flow in the jet stream today as we are on the backside of an upper-level trough. Northwest flow will help to keep clouds around the area through this evening and it’s possible there could be a stray rain or snow shower before midnight tonight although widespread precipitation is not expected.

Surface high pressure will begin to build over the Ohio Valley and overnight and we can expect to see a decrease in clouds after midnight. Low temperatures will reach the lower to middle 20s under mostly clear skies.

Wednesday 1/28 – Mostly Sunny – High 44º / Wed Night – Increasing Clouds – Low 3

Southern Kentucky will finally see a break in the dreary weather tomorrow thanks to surface high pressure and weak upper-level ridging.

It will be slightly warmer tomorrow with high temperatures expected to reach the lower 40s. The real story will be the return of the sunshine as we can expect mostly clear skies. Many residents of southern Kentucky may not be used to seeing the Sun after days of cloud cover.

After a brief absence, clouds will return tomorrow night as an area of low pressure to our northwest begins to move east towards Kentucky. Ahead of this low, we can expect some warm air advection in our area which will keep our low temperatures in the middle 30s tomorrow night.

Thursday 1/29  Cloudy; Sct’d Showers; Breezy  High 50º / Thu night – Iso’d Showers Early; Cloudy – Low 29º

Surface low pressure will continue moving to the east on Thursday and we expect precipitation to begin impacting southern Kentucky around sunrise. Temperatures will make a run at 50º  so we will just be dealing with rain showers and precipitation amounts look to be around 0.1″.

A surface cold front will plow west-to-east across the state late on Thursday afternoon and we will see surface winds turn to the northwest as colder air moves in behind the system. If the cold air can catch up to the remaining moisture we could see precipitation briefly end as snow showers Thursday evening with no accumulations expected at this time.

Precipitation looks to end by midnight on Thursday and low temperatures will bottom out in the upper 20s.
