Monday Morning Bowling Green Weather Update

Real-Time Bowling Green Weather Radar:

Today 1/5 – Sunny – High 30° / Tonight –Partly Cloudy – Low 22º

6am 19º – 9am 21º – 12pm 25º – 3pm 30º – 6pm 27º

Good morning, we are currently seeing temperatures in the upper teens as an upper-level trough has settled over the eastern United States. This trough has ushered in a cold air mass  over most of the region.

High pressure at the surface will keep our weather calm today. Expect high temperatures to not even reach the freezing mark today with lows falling into the lower 20s tonight.

Tuesday – Partly Cloudy – High 40º / Tues Night – Mostly Cloudy – Low 19º

A weak clipper system will dive into southern Kentucky from the northwest tomorrow. While most of the precipitation from this system will stay off to our north, this clipper will usher in some cloud cover by later tomorrow afternoon.

There will be some brief warm air advection late tomorrow associated with this wave which will allow high temperatures to make a run at reaching 40º. It will certainly be cold enough for a few stray snow showers in southern Kentucky tomorrow night although no accumulations are expected at this time.

Wednesday – Partly Cloudy, Windy, Cold – High 22º / Wed Night – Mostly Clear – Low

As this clipper system departs to our east, a reinforcing shot of cold air will move in behind it through the upper-level trough. Morning clouds and some stray snow flurries will linger early, but by noon partly cloudy skies and very cold temperatures will take over.

Very strong cold air advection combined with sustained northwest surface winds of 10-20mph Wednesday will make for a brutally cold day as wind chills will hang in the single digits for most of the day. Mostly clear skies overnight will allow temperatures to fall into the single digits overnight.

If you are not a fan of the cold weather, the bad news it that this upper-level trough will hang around and lock the cold air mass in place through Saturday with another bitterly cold day expected Thursday. Outdoor activity should be limited whenever winds combine with cold temperatures to produce dangerous wind chills.

Remember to bring pets and other animals to shelter when it is this cold outside.  With the coldest air of the season to date on the way, it would be a good idea to review these safety tips for dealing with the extreme cold before it arrives:
