Into The Storm Receives Mixed Reviews

Into the Storm roared into the box office on Friday night. Being in the meteorological community, I was curious to see some of the response from weather weenies and meteorologists alike. The reviews have been pretty mixed. From people falling asleep, to people saying they’ll see it again. One thing is clear, this movie is not like Twister,  which roared onto the big screen in 1996.

Into The Storm follows a very different storyline than that of Twister. This plot summary is provided on IMDb. You can see some of the parallels to modern day storm chasing.

“In the span of a single day, the town of Silverton is ravaged by an unprecedented onslaught of tornadoes. The entire town is at the mercy of the erratic and deadly cyclones, even as storm trackers predict the worst is yet to come. Most people seek shelter, while others run towards the vortex, testing how far a storm chaser will go for that once-in-a-lifetime shot.”

Some of the resemblances are pretty obvious. I’ll show you a few below.

Above is a photo of a portion of the movie Into The Storm. The stormchaser is in a vehicle that is eerily similar to Sean Casey’s Tornado Intercept Vehicle (TIV).

Next, I’ll show you a picture of some of the debris being lofted up from one of the tornadoes in the movie. Apparently, a tornado hits a semi and the semi goes airborne.

Seems far fetched? Not so much. It happened in Dallas, Texas.

And, finally we come to the large wedge tornado that is seen apparently at the end of the movie. You can see for yourself that the tornado is massive.

Cool, right? Could it happen in real life? Well, this looks like a remake of the Bowdle, South Dakota tornado from May 22, 2010.

All in all, I’ll undoubtedly see the movie at some point this month. Probably because I’m a weather junkie. Meteorologists and weather enthusiasts took to Twitter to express their feelings about Into The Storm.
